srael-based Cellebrite announced an upgraded version of its UFED (Universal Forensic Extraction Device), a Windows CE-based gadget designed for use by police and intelligence services. Now that version 1.1.3.8 extracts data from Apple's iPad and Tom Tom PNDs and 65 other new devices, a total of more than 2,300 devices can be forced to rat on their owners, the company says.
The UFED is a handheld, battery-operated Windows CE computer that is bundled with a bevy of adapter cables, and is capable of being connected to target phones via serial, USB, infrared, or Bluetooth. The device has a five-way controller and a simple character display, and its other specifications include an Ethernet port, a 520MHz Marvell processor, 128MB of RAM, and 64MB of flash storage, according to Cellebrite.
Cellebrite says the UFED can extract data from more than 95 percent of phones on the market, including CDMA, GSM, IDEN and TDMA phones regardless of carrier. Supported phone OSes include Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry, Palm, Symbian, Windows Mobile, and more, the company says.
For release 1.1.3.8 of the UEFD's firmware, says Cellebrite, it has added the following:
* Apple iPad support -- UFED V1.1.3.8 introduces the Apple iPad File System Dump and automatic decoding for Contact details. Users can now browse the iPad File System, utilize Data Filters and carve relevant data via the advanced search functionality.
* TomTom support -- this new feature allows UFED users to extract and decode information from TomTom navigation devices. GPS Fixes and Locations are visualized on Google Maps and Google Earth, providing UFED users with the tools to map where the TomTom device has been present and what routes have been planned by the user.
* Geotags support -- geotagged images can be decoded and visualized on Google Maps and Google Earth
In addition to the above, V1.1.3.8 adds support for 65 additional devices, bringing the number of phones supported to 2,306.
