Default tOSHIBA eRROR 10-FA11-0017 - 26th February 2008, 12:00 AM

I have a Toshiba Laptop running Vista Premium and my computer would not do anything any more when hit start it would say bootmgr not found. I tried everything. Now I have put recovery disk in and after about 40 minutes justwhen I thought it was finished it gives me ERROR : 10-FA!!-0017
Does anyone know what this is. Tried Google on another computer with no luck. I wonder is my hard drive screwed.
Any help would be appreciated

Actally can you boot into safemode with networking? If so, uninstall your AV and any other scan programs for the time being. Are you using xp home or pro or what? Try resetting the bios to defaults settings. Also, try performing a repair install or full install but this definately sounds like a hard drive failing...

If you can get it to boot to a c prompt then you could
run "chkdsk f"
This will help you find out if the hard drive has issues and the "f"
tells it to fix automatically.
Since you first lost the boot loader and now you have errors
then you probably have a bad hard drive.

Also, can you go into bios and see if the laptop even sees the
hard drive?

Default Same problem - 19th April 2008, 09:41 AM

I have the same problem. When i tried to reinstall Vista Home Premium the same error appeared. I tried everithing from the recovery disk, including erasing the hdd, formatting etc. In command prompt you can also try Bootrec.exe with all the options, maybe it will work. For me it didn't till now.
But i don't think the Hdd is broken since i installed Vista from another Kit and it worked, but i cannot activate it since it's hacked. So you can try buing another Vista Kit.
Now i try to resolv the problem with a Hdd recovery application, e.g. Partition Table Doctor. PTD 3.5. is compatible with Vista. As i studied till now i think this is the best application for this job. I also think the problem might be with the Master Boot Record (MBR). If you can find another solution to resolve the error, please let me know.

Good luck!

PS. VISTA SUCKS! I installed Windows XP but i couldn't find compatible drivers.

I don't know anything about vista but I had similar problem in xp I fixed it by running fdisk /mbr this fixes the mbr to find the boot program for the os you are running. It worked for me but as with all undocumented commands research research and use at your own risk good luck

hirens boot disk is a good tool for diagnosing problems and i think it has some recovery tools....not sure if it's good for vista but may be worth checking out.
i'd personally just clear the drive and install XP....too many unknowns with vista still and i don't trust it...just my opinion

I would say hdd issue.
I have had Vista since Sept 07.
I have no real complaints.
After a few modifications and tweaks I found on the web
