I have two 9242's and both of them are rebooting on their own, sometimes they cycle so badly I have to pull the plug and then they might be good for another 3-10 hours. Both are currently on V185 firmware.

As usual BELL is no help. One agent said it's a known "software" bug they are trying to deal with, another agent told me I'd have to send in BOTH receivers, another agent told me to turn my receiver off because V186 had been released, which I later found out was not true.

Is anybody else in the same boat and does anybody have any information as to what's causing this admitted mess by BELL? Like always I have to turn to the online forums as they provide better help than the support I'm supposed to be paying for.

I have tried the obvious things, unplugging, hard reset, clearing RAM, formatting hard drive, nothing works so far which leads me to believe it's firmware related.

I know this sounds like a weird solution but it worked for me. If your TV has a sensor for adjusting the contrast based on the light in the room, turn it off. When it is on, the receiver won't work properly. I don't know why this fixes the problem, but it does. There might be other TV settings that affect the receiver but I don't know what they are.

Then it stopped working altogether. wouldn't even turn on. Fan constantly on also.

I disconnected the unit opened and disconnected the hard drive. fan comes on for for a minute or so then shuts off. All control is returned to the reciever and operates normaly.

This tells me its the hard drive. Can others disconnect their hard drives also? I started having this trouble about the same time B*ll started introducing firmware 185 into stream.

They told me its not their problem and I could for 150 dollars get a refurbished one. I am thinking they may have caused this problem and are keeping hush about it with the 185 firmware.

Also does anyone know of a compatible HD that would work with the 9242?

Mine did this for the SECOND time a few days ago... I couldn't even get it to start no matter how many times I unplugged. Eventually I removed cover, blew out the dust (which was a lot), plugged it back in without HDD connected, and it booted right up. After 12 hours, I connected the HDD without the case, then finally I put the case back on... it's been running a few days now just fine.

Usually if the hard drive is failing you get an error code (as I have in the past). My guess is this is an overheating issue. I came close to sending this receiver back to BELL because it definitely seemed messed up, but I had patience, kept unplugging, clearing the memory and eventually it worked. If it fails again, then I don't know. I'm going to hope the dust and dirt clogging the fan and hard drive was the issue for me.

Make sure if you're ordering a new hard drive you get EVERY SINGLE LETTER correct. I ordered the WD5000AAJS and it came with -00 instead of -57 on the end. It did not work. Eventually I found the ST3500830SCE Seagate and it works awesome with more recording time.
